Learning to Live Free Again

Freedom is not only leaving the old situation. It is learning to walk differently today, one small step at a time.

Galatians 5:1

The Day You Didn't Brace

It's been almost two years since that hard season ended. For a long time afterward, you still lived like you were in it. Every phone call made your stomach drop. Every disagreement felt like the beginning of a war. You kept explaining yourself to people who weren't even accusing you of anything.

Then one ordinary Tuesday, something small happens. A friend pushes back on an idea you had, and you just... answer. Calmly. Honestly. No pounding heart, no rehearsed defense, no replaying it all night. You hang up, start the dishes, and halfway through the second plate it hits you: I didn't brace.

That's what freedom often looks like. It rarely arrives with fireworks. It shows up in ordinary moments. A calmer reaction. An honest conversation. A new willingness to trust wisely. A day when an old memory no longer owns the whole afternoon.

Freedom is not only leaving the old situation. It is learning to walk differently today.

Paul wrote to the churches in Galatia:

Galatians 5:1

"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery."

In its first setting, Paul was talking about freedom from trying to earn God's approval by keeping the law. Christ had already done what the law never could. But there's a principle in his words that reaches into all of life: a person who has been set free still has to learn to stand in that freedom. The door can be open long before we feel comfortable walking through it.

Because of Christ, you don't have to answer every old accusation. You don't have to anticipate every old conflict. You can make choices from faith and wisdom instead of constant self-protection.

And you don't have to get there all at once. Today, just take one small step toward a healthier response. Pray honestly about what still hurts. Reach out for help if you need it. Set a boundary you've been avoiding. Offer forgiveness, even if it's the first of many times. Or give a trustworthy person a fair chance. Growth may be gradual, and that's okay. God is patient with the process, and you can be too.

Standing in It

This whole week has been about the things we carry after the situation is over: the feelings that linger, the scenes we replay, the old hurts that spill onto new people, and the feelings we mistake for facts. Here is the good news underneath all of it. Christ has already done the setting free. Our part is learning, one ordinary day at a time, to stand in it. What is one small way you can walk in greater freedom today?

The old season may be part of your story, but it doesn't have to write every new chapter.

Keep going
